Design Therapy

It happened to me again! I'm looking forward to a night of deep relaxing sleep, and boom, I'm trying to make an over-sized piano with gold leafing into a dining room table! This happens to me all the time, which is part of the reason I chose to spend my days being an interior designer. Whenever I go to sleep with unresolved issues, which is more often than not, I end up trying to design them out in my dreams.

Last night I dreamed that I just moved into a loft space, similar to the size and condition of an artists loft. The door frame was in, but there was a 3 inch gab, so I could see all of my neighbors' stuff. He had huge shoes, that looks to be about 3 feet long! They were like the ones you see in cartoon sketches, that look like torpedoes. Outside of these racks and racks of shoes, he had a lot of industrial equipment and machinery.

My loft space had an interesting layout. It was a long rectangle on one end and then opened up into a large triangle. I decided I would put my sleeping area at the end of the rectangle and then put the dining and living room in the triangle portion. I thoughts I would make a very cool layout. The only problem was that there were rows upon rows of crap! Then I turned around and saw a check out counter. There was a CVS in the middle of my loft! How am I going to design around this? I was flabbergasted.

After I woke up, I thought more about what my dream meant. Hmmm...I am trying to design and there is a business trying to sell a bunch of crap right in the middle of my creativity. I don't think it is hard to figure out that my job is this huge waste of time in the middle of me trying to do something that I love and feel inspired by.....

Resolution: Find someone to pay my mortage for the next 2 years, so that I can completely focus on school...

The role of photography in ID

I recently viewed the trailer about the documentary on Julius Shulman. I learned that he is considered one of the greatest architectural photographers in the world. Many of his photographs have shaped the way we view modernism and have contributed to the way the public views modernism. I can't wait to see the film. Check out the trailer at http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/visualacoustics/

All for now...
